You’ve likely seen State Farms’ popular commercial about Cheryl’s she shed. The commercial went viral and people are suddenly interested in getting a she shed just like Cheryl’s. What is a she shed exactly? And is there such a thing as a “she sheer she shed”? We’ll be covering exactly that in this blog post.
What does Cheryl’s she shed mean?
In the commercial, a couple is in a backyard watching a shed on fire. Cheryl, the woman, is calling her insurance about her she shed, since she’s worried her shed isn’t covered by insurance. Her insurance (State Farm), tells her that it is covered. Her husband doesn’t look too happy about the she shed. But she’s very happy to let her husband know that she’ll be getting a “chichier” she shed than before.
Viewers might misinterpret the “chichier” for “she sheer” – the word used is actually “chichier”, which means a fancier, or nicer she shed.
It’s a great commercial, one that has really pushed Cheryl’s fame since she now gets recognised in streets. But what’s a she shed? You’ve likely heard of a man cave – a cave where a man can do whatever they like. A she shed is exactly that, but for women. It could be a place to relax, read a good book or watch a movie.
She sheds can be that shed in your background, like Cheryl’s in the State Farm commercial, or it could be one you decide to build up yourself. An entire book has been written on she sheds by the author Erika Kotite: “She Sheds: A Room of Your Own” pictured below.
The great thing about she sheds is that they don’t need electricity or plumbing. It’s a place to feel comfortable, to decorate as you wish and to fill up with as many pillows and blankets as you want. Check out House Beautiful for some she shed inspiration.
What does she sheer or she shear mean?
When you first watch the commercial, you may mistake Cheryl’s “chichier” for “she sheer” – thinking she may mean a more female “she” shed. She’s talking about replacing her shed with a more fancy and nicer looking shed. If you watch the subtitles, it’s easy to see that she actually means “chichier”. And if you look up what chichier means, you see that it means “elegance by virtue of being fashionable”.
What is the she shed commercial saying?
The following is the she shed commercial in summary. Cheryl plans on making an even “chichier” shed to the dismay of her husband, Victor. At the end of the commercial, we can see that Victor, the husband, isn’t too happy that his wife will be getting a “chichier” shed with a hilarious eye-roll. Obviously he has no choice but to accept it.
Who is the she shed actress?
Nicole Butler is the actress of the She Shed commercial, where she plays Cheryl with a burning “chichier” she shed. The commercial’s virality led her to write an article for the Huffington Post on what it was like being a star of the State Farm commercial. And who is the she shed actor playing Victor? It’s Reggie Currelly, another actor he appears often in some movies and commercials.
She has starred in different roles in different ads, including for Walmart and Progressive. In her article, she explains that the commercial wasn’t the only one State From produced – they had done several others, one having aired over 11,000 times. Turns out, Butler’s commercial didn’t need as many airings to go viral!
She reports in her Huffington Post article that her commercial has aired over 33,000 times and has over 1 million views on Youtube. Her ad has gone viral, and she now gets recognised on the street. She explains that she’s glad the commercial is comedic, since people are generally happy and excited to recognise her on the street.
She also reports getting a lot of questions on what “chichier” actually means (see above) and people ask her who actually burned down the she shed – usually Victor, the husband in the commercial. And many people want to see what the new she shed will look like!
Who invented the she shed?
You may have seen the commercial and are now interested in building a she shed of your own. The she shed has an interesting history – the idea of women having their own private area has been around for hundreds of years. It used to be called a “bower”, and now is commonly referred to as a she shed. Men usually think of their man cave as a place to play videogames, whereas she sheds are more of a place of relaxation and work for women.
Although there is no one person that is believed to have invented the she shed, many refer to Sandra Foster as the creator when she built her own she shed in the Catskills mountains in New York. For her it was a place to get away from the stress of work and get some space from her husband whenever she felt she needed to.
What is a she shed for?
So what exactly is the point of a she shed? You can use your she shed as a place for relaxation, creativity and maybe even a place to get started on those hobbies such as gardening, blogging or painting. You can also use the she shed as a place to gather girlfriends for a dinner night or just for drinks. Or maybe as a getaway to get some work done and go on a retreat with yourself.
When it comes to building your she shed, think of it as building an extension of your home, but without having to spend thousands of dollars. She shed kits are a thing (here are some great she shed ideas to get started) – for a few hundred dollars you can build your own she shed away from home. They are pretty quick to build and you can choose from a large variety of colors, shapes and styles. If you’re into building and decorating, you can take your she shed to the next level by installing plumbing, large windows or even AC.
How can I make my own she shed like Cheryl’s?
Want to get started on a she shed similar to Cheryl’s? Make sure to check with your city if you need a permit to build an extra house on your property. Most small structures can be done without a building permit, but it’s always best to check. Then, all you need to do is get started! And maybe consider getting State Farm home insurance so you’ll get to build that chichier she shed!
