Dressing up for the holidays is one of the fun parts of the holiday season. You get to put on fancy clothes, do your makeup, and style your holiday hairstyle. If you’re lucky, you even get a babysitter for the night.
While the fancy clothes are something you plan well ahead of time, the fancy hair can sometimes be an afterthought. By the time you think about it, you’re running out of time. So, we’ve pulled together a list of holiday hair ideas. There’s something here for everyone, so enjoy!
Ballet Bun
Ballet dancers are graceful and elegant and they tend to choose a hairstyle that will exude that same aura. YouTuber Mr. Kobena shows you how to create the classic ballet bun. Add a few hairpins and you have a holiday look that everyone will envy.
Chignon
The Chignon is a classic look that never seems to go out of style. YouTuber Tangerine Beauty shows you how to make what she calls a “simple and low romantic chignon”. All you need to make the look work is some hairbands, bobbi pins, and hairspray.
Classic Braid
If you have extra long hair, sometimes it’s difficult to find something to do with it. Why not go classic? The classic braid looks good no matter what the season. YouTuber Learn Do Teach Hairstyles shows you how to create five classic braids.
Dutch Braid
The Dutch braid just looks fancy, which is probably why it’s a great hairstyle for a fancy party. YouTuber LaineMarieBeauty understands that not everyone has the same type of hair, so she’s created a tutorial to help people of all hair lengths get that fancy Dutch braid look. The tutorial below has eight different Dutch braid tutorials all wrapped into one. That includes the side braid and the half down Dutch braid.
Easy Crown Braid
Also called the Halo Braid, this hairstyle is perfect for your friends and family holiday party or one at work. YouTube user LaineMarieBeauty shows you how to create the look with this easy tutorial. It’s a do it yourself tutorial, which means you can do it without the help of anyone else.
She suggests that this is a good style for people with medium hair. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can also weave a ribbon or some gold wiring into the hairstyle to give it that extra angelic look.
French Twist
The French Twist is a classic hairstyle for a wedding or prom, so it will look incredibly elegant at your next holiday party. YouTuber Alex Gaboury shows you just how to do it yourself.
Fishtail Braided Updo
This one starts as a French braid and then wraps around to create an updo. YouTuber Missy Sue shows you how to make a hairstyle that’s elegant and beautiful. Add a hairpin to make things extra festive.
Half Up, Half Down
This look is especially good for the indecisive party-goers who aren’t sure if they want to put their hair up or leave it down. Now, you get the best of both worlds.
YouTuber Annies Forget Me Knots calls this a soft romantic, half up hairstyle. I like it because it looks like she put a lot of work into it, but it’s only a five-minute tutorial. Be sure to check out the video before you attempt the look because there are a few items that you’ll need before you start.
Headband Hairstyle
When I think of the holidays, I think of sparkling lights, glistening champagne, and lots of tinsle. That’s why a headband hairstyle might be your best holiday choice. Add a crystal or beaded headband to give you that holiday sparkle. YouTuber Bebexo shows you how to do it.
High Ponytail
It’s simple and it can be elegant. The high ponytail is fairly easy to do. Howcast shows you how to do it.
Hollywood Waves
Whether you’re attending a holiday party or walking the red carpet at a movie premiere, this hairstyle is a great choice. These are classic old Hollywood hair waves. Make sure you have some time and a hair wand because it’s going to take some work, but it’s worth it. YouTuber Beauty ES Balance shows you how it’s done.
Pull Through Braid
This is much like a normal braid except you pull the hair through instead of weave it. You can find the tutorial from Loepsie below. Add a few rhinestone barrettes to create an extra stunning look.
Quick and Easy Bun
If you just don’t have the time to do your hair, but you want to wear it up, then a quick and easy bun may be the solution. YouTuber SweetHearts Hair shows you how to create a bun in two minutes. You can tighten it up for a cleaner look, or mess it up for a more casual style.
Slide In
As Harper’s Bazaar suggests maybe all you need is the right accessory. Sometimes you don’t need to add anything to your hairdo at all, just brush it out and then slide in a jeweled bobbi pin or clip and you have your look. Easy peasy.
Twisted Crown Braid
You’re dressed like a princess, why not look like one too? Add a crown to your ensemble with this twisted crown braid. Abby Smith shows you how to create the twisted crown braid quickly. In fact, it will take less than five minutes.
Waterfall Braid
YouTube user Missy Sue walks you through the easy steps to creating this waterfall braid, a classic look for those holiday parties. If you’re looking to add something extra, instead of a hairclip or bobby pin, consider holding the braid in place with silver or red velvet ribbon to help add to the holiday look.
Wavy Hairstyle
Sometimes you just need to add waves. Wavy hair can create a beautiful look for when you leave your hair down. The best part, you can do it overnight, while you sleep. YouTuber Shonagh Scott shows you how to create the look overnight with tight waves. You can watch the video here.
If you would like looser waves, YouTuber Jessica Vu has another overnight solution here.
Wet Hair Look
The magazine Cosmopolitan says, “It’s a perfectly chic look for any holiday occasion.” Best of all, the wet hair look is easy to replicate. Just add gel-cream to slightly damp hair and then glossing spray to finish.
